Geo-tagging

On Friday I took part in a 'geo-tagging' workshop. This workshop introduced us to geo-tagging and allowed us to experience 'geo-tagging' ourselves. Before the workshop I had a vague perception of what this actually was..geographic location of some sort, marking different landmarks. I was close however there is a lot more to it and the ability it has in the networking world. After the workshop, I realised that it is used widely today and will be used even more so in the future. This is a link to "what is geo-tagging?" to give you an insight. For designers and many organisations, geo-tagging will play a big part now and in future technologies.

Inspired. Appreciative.

I would love to share this video with you. I was watching 'charlieissocoollike'(the youtube famed youtuber) who mentioned another user named 'elmify'. It so happens that her video is closely linked to a project I have recently started. Thank you Elmify!

Integration

My aim is to make a mattress inwhich disaster victims can be aided with to encourage grouping and bonding after being physically and psychologically displaced. I have decided to experiment in images and logos which I can use to help find a way of bonding mattresses, to achieve human bonds. Soon I will upload my findings of this which I look forward to the results followed by my final concept. I will also be looking closely at Company- Survival One's technology within their materials as I know there is lots of opportunity there inwhich I would like to integrate within this mattress. Now...I better get to the pile of work I have to do. My student life is becoming a 24-7 job.Wow. Who complains about the 9 til 5?

Resistance

This is a short clip using a scaled down prototype which I made from a shower curtain. This is obviously waterproof however I wanted to see how the water landed on the mattress and whether it should be taken further.

The outcome was fascinating. The water gathered in clusters and run off the mattress. Then, to touch, the mattress was dry. So I will leave this model outside overnight (weather permitting/ alternatively the shower) and see how sustainable this mattress would be in a real life disaster.

Now, back to the concept...

pre/post effects of the disaster

Furthering the psychological route in terms of the mattress design I have:

  • viewed images of people in these situations

  • research what physical possessions mean the most to the effected

  • research post disaster psychological effects on the people

Disaster Mattress

...design a mattress for a disaster scenario. Initially, I approached this project in a simple open-minded way and thought of the obvious disasters i.e hurricane, earthquake etc linking them to solutions such as a waterproof mattress and a floating mattress. Through development work and watching clips from disaster's and post disaster's I gained a deeper insight in how these natural disaster's really affect people and places. I then explored psychological effects on people post disaster and came to the conclusion that the people suffer equally or more than those who were physically harmed.

Welcome

SO! It's summer 2010 and I am beginning my blog. I've always had everything i've ever created with me on paper, on pc and in my head so I think it's time to let you know how I work. I'm going to post work which I did when I started out as a design student followed by up-to-date work.
